Oklahoma City Minimum Wage After SQ 832: Why $7.25 Isn't What OKC Pays

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Three months after voters turned down State Question 832, Oklahoma's minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour, where it has sat since 2009. But the metro's job market left that number behind years ago. New federal data puts the average Oklahoma City wage at $29.00 an hour, and even the lowest-paid job families average about double the legal floor.

The floor stayed put. The market did not. Here is what the SQ 832 result means for Oklahoma City workers, what OKC jobs actually pay, and where to aim a job search this fall.

What SQ 832 Would Have Changed, and What Stays the Same

SQ 832 would have lifted the state minimum to $12 on January 1, 2027, then to $13.50 in 2028 and $15 in 2029, with inflation adjustments after that. It also would have ended several exemptions, bringing part-time workers, students and farm workers under the law. Statewide returns show it lost by more than 10 points, with post-election coverage crediting rural opposition.

Under the U.S. Department of Labor's state summary, Oklahoma adopts the federal $7.25 by reference for larger employers, and very small businesses outside federal coverage can legally pay as little as $2.00. Tipped servers can be paid $2.13 in cash as long as tips carry them to $7.25.

Oklahoma City cannot step in on its own, either. Title 40, Section 160 of state law reserves the entire minimum wage question to the Legislature. Bricktown, Edmond, Norman and Moore all sit under the same number, so unlike metros that straddle a city wage line, the address of the job does not change the legal floor anywhere in central Oklahoma.

💵 What OKC Jobs Actually Pay

The legal minimum is a floor, not a going rate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Oklahoma City wage release, published in August with May 2025 data, shows average hourly pay by job family across the metro:

Food preparation and serving: $14.38
Personal care and service: $16.03
Building and grounds cleaning and maintenance: $16.87
Healthcare support: $18.36
Transportation and material moving: $21.56
Office and administrative support: $22.48
Installation, maintenance and repair: $28.42
Healthcare practitioners and technical: $46.98

OKC trails the national average in every one of those groups. The bigger story is the gap between the bottom and the middle. Food service is about one in ten local jobs and the lowest paid. Logistics along I-40 and I-44, health care support at the big hospital systems, and maintenance and repair work all average several dollars more an hour, and plenty of entry-level roles in them don't ask for a four-year degree. These are averages, so actual offers vary by employer, shift and experience.
